Sweet Potato Browned Butter Honey Cake

Browned butter adds extra flavor to this delicious cake.

  • Cake:
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1â…“ cup packed dark brown sugar
  • â…“ cup honey
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 tsp. real vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp. freshly grated orange peel
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2½ tsp. baking soda
  • 1 Tbsp. cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. kosher salt
  • 2 cups sweet potato, peeled and grated (about 1 large potato)
  • Frosting:
  • 3½ cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 1 package (8 oz.) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 Tbsp. real maple syrup
  • ÂĽ tsp. kosher salt


  1. Heat oven to 350°F. Generously grease and flour 13”x9” baking pan. In medium skillet, over medium-high heat, melt butter until foamy and golden brown, about 6-8 minutes (butter reduces to ¾ cup melted and browned); let cool.

  2. In large bowl beat brown butter, brown sugar, honey and eggs until creamy (1-2 minutes). Add orange juice, vanilla and orange peel; continue beating until well mixed.

  3. On low speed add flour, baking soda, cinnamon and salt; continue beating for 1 minute. Stir in sweet potato. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for 30 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely.

  4. Combine all frosting ingredients in large bowl; beat until spreading consistency (1-2 minutes). Frost cooled cake. Garnish as desired with freshly grated orange peel. Makes 18 servings.

  5. Tip: Make in 2 9” baking pans for a beautiful birthday cake. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
