Fully Loaded Apple Crisp for Grownups

Apple crisp is an easy dessert to make, and it's one of the all-time comfort food classics. This version retains that basic simplicity, but adds nuts, dried fruit, and rum or whiskey for a more sophisticated combination of flavors and textures.




  • Butter or pan spray, for greasing the dish
  • ½ cup golden raisins • ¼ cup dried cranberries
  • ¼ cup dried cranberries or other dried berries
  • ¼ cup rum or whiskey
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup regular oatmeal
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. ground allspice
  • â…“ cup cold butter, cut into small pieces
  • â…“ cup toasted almonds
  • 4 medium baking apples (like Jonagold, Empire or Braeburn)
  • 3 Tbsp. granulated or raw sugar
  • TIPS:
  • Apples with a balance of tart and sweet flavors, such as Jonagold, Empire and Braeburn, are good options. Alternatively, use a mixture of sweet apples such as Golden Delicious with tart Granny Smiths to achieve a similar effect.
  • For an even more lavish version of the crisp, add chopped walnuts or pecans to the apples and drizzle them with melted caramel before adding the topping.


  1. Heat your oven to 375°F. Butter or spray an 8″ square glass or ceramic baking dish and set it aside. Combine the raisins and dried berries in a small bowl and drizzle them with the rum or whiskey. Set the bowl aside while the fruit absorbs the spirits.

  2. Combine the flour, oatmeal, brown sugar and spices in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse a few times until they’re well mixed, then add the butter. Pulse repeatedly until the butter is incorporated into the mixture, forming coarse crumbs. Pour the topping mixture into a mixing bowl and add the almonds. Toss the mixture with your hands until the almonds are evenly distributed.

  3. Peel and core the apples, and slice them lengthwise into wedges. Toss them with the granulated sugar. Arrange the apples evenly in the baking pan. Scatter the raisins and dried berries over the apples, along with any remaining rum or whiskey. Spoon the topping mixture over the apples.

  4. Bake for 30-40 minutes, depending on the type of apples you’ve used, until the topping is crisp and golden, and the apples are tender when pierced with a toothpick. Remove the crisp from your oven and rest it for at least 10-15 minutes. Serve hot or warmed.
